4 Okt 1957 Jahr - First Artificial Satellite

Beschreibung:

After the Germans had managed to build a rocket that could break through Earth's atmosphere in the 1940s, it became clear that these could be used to launch objects into space. The Soviet Union was the first to finally achieve this feat when on 4th October 1957, they launched the very first artificial satellite into Earth's orbit, known as Sputnik 1. This marked the beginning of the Space Race.

Over the following years, the Soviet Union and the United States would compete with each other on who could achieve various "firsts" in space exploration. Three months after the launch of Sputnik 1, the US launched their own satellite called Explorer 1. Satellites would be used over the next century for a wide variety of technological uses. Signals could be transmitted from the Earth to a satellite, and then back down to another part of the Earth which made huge advancements in communication, such as television and radio broadcasts. Satellites would also be used to greatly assist navigation, weather study and prediction, mapping, and many scientific experiments.
