20 Nov 1998 Jahr - International Space Station

Beschreibung:

Following the end of the Space Race, people around the world began to cooperate more fully on the exploration of outer space. Eventually, the space agencies of America, Russia, Japan, Europe, and Canada embarked on a project to construct an enormous station that would orbit around the Earth and be used by the international community.

The first module, known as Zarya, was launched from the United States on 20th November 1998 and placed into Earth's orbit, thus marking the creation of the International Space Station (ISS). Three Russian components were launched a month later and attached to the Zarya, and over the next thirteen years, 159 different sections would be added to the ISS, giving it a total length of 239 ft (73 m), a width of 356 ft (109 m), and a height of 66 ft (20 m) - the largest man-made object in space.

As the station grew, it began to be used for a variety of different scientific studies, including research into astronomy, space weather, human biology, and numerous experiments. From the year 2000, the International Space Station has been continuously inhabited by people, from nineteen different countries around the world; many of these would conduct important tests or educational demonstrations that ultimately add to humanity's combined knowledge of the Universe.
