February 3, 1870 - 15th Amendment Ratified African American men were given the right to vote.
July 2, 1964 - Civil Rights Act of 1964 President Johnson fought to end discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin with this Act.
February 26, 1965 - Jimmie Lee Jackson Dies Police assaulting Civil Rights demonstrators led to the eventual March 7 Selma protest, especially after the beating of Army veteran Jimmie Lee Jackson. The original plan was to bring his body along the march to drop off at the steps of the capital in Montgomery.
March 7,1965 - First March from Selma to Montgomery Outraged Civil Rights activists attempted to march in protest from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama. They were forced to dissipate after local police and state troopers beat and gassed them.
March 21, 1965 - President Lyndon B. Johnson's Speech to Congress The President delivered a passionate address to Congress pleading with them to vote in favor of an act to protect the African American vote. Dignity and equality were central themes used to enhance the speech.
March 25, 1965 - Third (and Largest) March from Selma to Montgomery Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. joined thousands of protesters as they eventually succeeded in marching to Montgomery.
August 6, 1965 - Voting Rights Act of 1965 The Act attempted to remove barriers obstructing African Americans from voting. Literacy tests, poll taxes, and residency restrictions had previously plagued the system.
January 20, 2009 - Election of First African American President of the United States of America President Barack Obama became the first ever African American President of the United States of America with a 365-173 vote win over John McCain.
