Pheasants lived in small huts with a central fire pit and a hole in the roof so smoke could escape
Photo of a Celt fire pit
Roman bakers used fire places with flues that piped smoke outdoors
Hypocaust venting system
Like the Celts they had a central fire pit and a hole in the roof to vent out the smoke.
The fire pit then evolved into the hearth which was used to prevent embers from the fire to fall on the floor and cause damage
Chimneys were made and fireplaces were moved to a rooms wall.
The chimney allowed for fireplaces to be placed on each floor.
The fireplace grate was invented so air could reach the fire from underneath it
Coal replaced timber for fueling a fire - Was toxic -Required elaborate chimneys -Produced soot and ash
Franklin stove was in the middle of the room and could radiate double the heat while using only a quarter of the fuel
The fireplace could radiate more heat in a room but it could not be used for cooking.
The design was used throughout the 19 century
The fireplace was starting to be used less for heat and more for it's design.
Fireplaces have now only become about their design not their function.
The fire generates thermal energy through combustion. Also the fire pit would heat the air near it and through the process of convection the surrounding air would heat up as well.
The Romans had a system which they used a heater which would heat up the surrounding air and the hot air would then rise but when it cooled down it would exit the room through flues built into the homes.
The Franklin stove used convection to heat up a house. It was made of cast iron so it would heat up and it had a tube underneath it and the air inside would heat up and pass through different rooms to heat them up.
The fireplace grate allowed for the thermal energy to increase because it allowed for more oxygen to reach the fire thus
More thermal energy was produced because the coal that would be burned would produce more
