President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It was originally proposed by Attorney General Herbert Brownell. The act marked the first occasion since Reconstruction that the federal government undertook significant legislative action to protect civil rights.The act is passed by Congress and creates the Civil Rights Commission and also authorizes the Justice Department to look into cases of African Americans being deprived of their voting rights in the South.
