This was a statement officially approved by Congress on the fourth of July in 1776, though it had been in the works for weeks before. It was first proposed on June 4, 1776, drafted 24 days, and finally adopted roughly a week and a half following. At last, their ties to Britain were cut, and independence was formally declared. This came about after the British repeatedly taxed the colonists against their will and refused to compromise, removing all chances of reconciliation. The British attempted to invalidate and ignore the statement as a mere angry cry from unimportant colonies, but other countries now recognized America as an individual power. Through this declaration, America was able to secure the aid of France, Spain, and the Netherlands, as they now formally recognized the struggle for independence of the colonists.
