The big development with stereo tape recordings gave the musician Les Paul a concept of a 8-track recording, this idea was accepted and developed by the Ampex corporation. In the early 60s Frank Zappa had a custom built 5-track recorder built by Paul Buff in his Pal recording studio in America.
