Following the arson of Germany's parliamentary building, the Reichstag, the Reichstag Fire Decree was passed to further promote Hitler's political agenda. The primary focus of the decree was to nullify a majority of civil liberties and to permit the prosecution of domestic Nazi opponents; a preventative measure against an imminent coup d'état.
