A revolt began with troops in Morocco, soon spreading to the military unites in the Spanish government. There were armed resistance against them from left-wing unions, which quickly mobilised civilians into militia units, joining troops that remained loyal to the Republic. The rebels were only able to take control of some parts of Spain.
Civil war has began.
