At age 13 when Jenner was apprentice to a country surgeon and apothecary near bristol. He heard a dairymaid say that she will never get smallpox for she had had cow pox. A disease in the same family but effects cows.

Later on as a physician Jenner realised she was right, women who had contracted cow pox didn't develop the deadly small pox. As when a virus infects an unfamiliar host in this case cow pox infecting a women it is less effective.

In May 1976 Jenner found a young dairy made called Sahra Nelmes who had fresh cow pox sores on her arms caught from a cow called blossom. Using matter from her puss joules he then inoculated James Phipps his gardeners son.

After a few days of fever and discomfort he was fine and a few months later Jenner again inoculated him but this time with small pox. No disease developed. He challenged this with further people doing the same procedure even on his own son Robbert Jenner. Nothing became of it. He published his findings in 1798
