In the 60s and 70s, an insurgency of guerilla groups opposed conservative governments throughout Latin America.

In Argentina, the most prominent groups included the Montoneros that belonged to the communist branch of Peronistas and the Ejercito Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP) whose goal was to instill the values of socialism into the masses and associate themselves with other socialist groups. These were established in opposition to innefective governments and conservative dictatorships.

Ultimatley, the extreme right reacted by forming the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance (AAA). This was directed by the military and police branches.
