In 1955, Communist North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam. The U.S. initally responded by sending advisors and equipment to the South Vietnamese military, but in time the North Vietnamese would grow in strength and the U.S. would have to make a decision-leave South Vietnam to become communist and risk setting off a domino effect, or dedicate the military to an expensive and obscure war. President Lyndon Johnson chose the latter, and the United States would spend 20 years attempting to beat back the North Vietnamese before finally withdrawing.
