While the war devastated the economies of nearly all other participants, in the United States it actually caused rapid economic growth, and by the end of the war, Europe owed it billions of dollars, and it alongside the Soviet Union was the most powerful nation on Earth. As a nation that powerful, the United States could no longer maintain the Monroe Doctrine, as it was now one of the biggest players on the world stage.
