Descrição:
When war broke out between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson declared that the United States would remain neutral throughout the conflict. However, when U.S. merchant vessels began getting attacked by German submarines, and the British intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram, the U.S. entered the war on the grounds that its right to trade freely as a neutral nation were violated by Germany and it was entering the war with the intention of "make the world safe for democracy." The United States, while not contributing nearly as much to the war effort as other nations, helped push the German military back within their borders and force them to sign the Treaty of Versailles. It marks the beginning of the end of the age-old Monroe Doctrine that dominated U.S. foreign policy for the entirity of the nation's existence up to this point. At the war's end, Wilson would be a major contributor to the Treaty of Versailles, marking another instance of the U.S. moving away from the Monroe Doctrine. (Continuity: attempting to uphold U.S. values about democracy and inalienable rights around the world) (Change: U.S. foreign policy begins to shift away from the Monroe Doctrine) (Effect: the U.S. becomes a major player on the world stage)
