Election of 1836 Martin Van Buren presidency (7 dez 1836 ano – 4 mar 1841 ano)

Descrição:

This election had five total candidates, but only two of them received more than 10% of votes. The two main candidates were Martin Van Buren, a Democrat, and William Henry Harrison, a Whig. Martin Van Buren was Vice President to the previous president, Andrew Jackson. After the new party of the democrats, the Whigs began fighting for their control. The Whigs nominated three candidates, William Henry Harrison, Daniel Webster, and Hugh Lawson White, in hopes that Martin Van Buren would not receive enough votes and the vote would go to the House, where the Whigs had control. This did not work and Van Buren was elected.

Right after becoming president, Van Buren faced the Panic of 1837, caused from the Second National Bank of America being shut down.Van Buren did not pass the Annexation of Texas during his presidency, so that the balance between free and slave states would be maintained. Van Buren only served one term.
