In 1976, Mao Zedong died. Soon after his death, a struggle between moderate communist and a radial group led by Jiang Qing took place. The moderates wanted to restore order and economic growth. (Known as the Gang of Four).
In the late 1970’s, Deng Xiaoping became leader of the Moderates. He directed towards the reform of the economy. He came up with a plan known as the Four Modernizations. This included the improvement of agriculture, industry, science/ technology, and national defense.
This lead to scientific exchanges in the west. China began importing technology from the west. Major economic gains came from this during the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s.
