Born in Prague; an accomplished violist and violinist, as well as composer
Earned fame with the publication of his Slavonic Dances (for piano duet) in 1878
Wrote music in Classical forms (symphonies, concertos, etc.) as well as operas. Today his most famous works are his 9 symphonies and his cello concerto, in particular, his New World Symphony
Often incorporates folk melodies within his compositions.
Traveled widely, and upon invitation, spent three years in the United States (1892-1895)
The director of the Prague Conservatory from 1901 until his death
