Mussolini gradually took political power from the king and people of Italy. He gained popular support through violence and extremist language, and was given the position of Prime Minister after he and his supporters marched on Rome in 1922. After that he consolidated his power and eventually had become a dictator in 1925. He promised to restore Italy to its former glory.
