Presidency of Carlos Sardinas (1 dez 1988 ano – 30 nov 1994 ano)
Descrição:
The 53rd president of Mexico, Sardinas took office after the controversial election of 1988. He continued to push neoliberal economic policies like his predecessor, which included privatization of various industries and adoption of a new currency (the peso). His other presidential achievements include Mexico's entry to NAFTA, normalization of relations with Catholic clergy, and establishment of a relationship with the PAN party, in which victories in smaller elections were exchanged for support of Sardinas's policies. The National Human Rights Commission was also founded during his presidency. The end of his term was occupied by the Zapatista uprisings and numerous assassinations.
