The Great Famine (6 dez 1845 ano – 2 jul 1849 ano)

Descrição:

The Irish Potato Famine occurred in Ireland when the potato crop, often referred to as the lifeblood of the Irish economy, failed to produce sufficient product multiple years in a row. The famine was caused by a agricultural disease, known as the blight, which killed the majority of the potato crops and left the soil largely infertile. The potato famine most severely impacted the peasant class, with many tenant farmers being evicted after failing to pay rent. Aid from other nations was limited and not evenly distributed amongst those in need, and as a result nearly 2 million people perished. The potato famine also caused an increased concentration in land ownership and a shift from crop farming to animal raising.
