The Great Potato Famine (11 abr 1845 ano – 5 jun 1849 ano)
Descrição:
The Great Hunger was a time of starvation in Ireland. Potato crop failures were widespread between 1845 and 1849, causing both the leaves and the roots of many potato plants to die. The lack of food lead to over a million deaths from starvation, with most survivors being left malnourished. Additionally, about 2 million people left Ireland for Britain, continental Europe, or America. As a result, by 1920 the Irish population was less than half its levels before 1845. To this day, Ireland has only around 5 million residents, while in 1840 it had over 8 million.
