Descrição:
The Safavid dynasty, founded by Sufi, Shah Ismail, and his followers, differed from the other gunpowder empires in that the sect of Islam practiced was Shiite Islam. More specifically, they practiced an extreme form of Twelver Shiism, the belief that there have been twelve great Imams and that the 12th is hiding, waiting to be found. In this extreme form of Twelver Shiism, followers believe that the emperor is the 12th Imam and treat them as they would a being of divinity. Followers of this extreme form of Twelver Shiism are known as qizilbash. This form of Islam most likely emerged, due to the fact that it is similar to traditional Turkish beliefs.
