Sufism rises as an alternative way to understanding God. Unlike Sharia, Sufism relies not on law and rules but instead on ritual and exercise to make God present in a follower's life. Ta'wil, the Sufi interpretation of the Qu'ran, looks to find the hidden meaning in Qu'ranic verses, rather than a literal interpretation. Tariqa is Sufism's answer to Sharia, as it advocates for a visceral and emotional understanding of God. Many Sufis also deny luxury and material goods, as they believe it takes them away from God. Sufism through its formation of social brotherhoods also helps to bridge gaps between social class as well as spread the faith. Shaykhs, or the leaders of the social brotherhoods, were often thought to have a special blessing from God, and were the leaders of unique chains of rituals known as silsila.
