The Civil War was fought between the union and south, after the seceded. The War started with the Battle of Fort Sumter and ended with the surrender of general Robert E. Lee. The war is still the bloodiest in American history and had a huge impact on the further history of the United States. During the war, Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation, and while the proclamation did not actually have any legal authority, it symbolized that slavery was soon going to be illegal.
