After the election of the James K. Polk, Americans began to connect with the idea of "Manifest Destiny", which is what they believed was God's message to the United States to push them to expand over North America, and spread freedom and liberty. America's neighbors at the time were Mexico to the West and the South, and British Canada up North. They United States did not pursue going to war with the British for yet another time, so they decided that going to war with Mexico was the way to go. They were not willing to simply declare war on Mexico, so instead of being the ones to fire first, they lured some Mexican militiamen into the United States after walking into Mexican territory and firing at them. After they had crossed the border into the USA, a Mexican had shot one of the Americans, and Polk made the claim that Mexico had drawn blood on American soil, and went to war. The war ended in 1848 with Mexican defeat, and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which caused Mexico cessation of the territories that covered Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Colorado, and Texas. While it was an event which Americans liked, the outcome would cause a greater sense of divide within the nation, as the new territories had to be rendered as slave state or free state.
