Due to high national British debt following the Seven Years' War, colonial taxes were dramatically raised. Though Britain justified their continued sovereignty through the promise of defense and parliamentary representation, support for an independent America rose and spread across the colonies. When the Declaration of Independence was signed, war exploded between Great Britain and their unruly colony, ending in an American victory and a new independent government.
