Varangian Rurik is asked by east slavs to be their ruler in 862. He sets up a capital is set up in Novgorod and the people called themselves 'the Rus.' He successor captured Kiev and called that area Kievan Rus. In 988 AD, Vladimir the Great accepts Orthodox Christianity to strengthen ties with the Byzantine empire.
After Yaroslav's reign in 1054, the kingdom fell apart into several small kingdoms which were then swallowed up by the Mongols during their invasion 1237. Novgorod survived under the rulership of Alexander Nevsky, though, who submitted to the Mongols and fought off the Teutonic Knights to protect the city.
Despite the presence of the Tartars (Mongols), the Grand Principality of Moscow is created in ____. It is able to fend off the tartars and expand into present-day Baltic states and southeastern Finland. In 1480, it defeats the tartar army, ending their servitude to the golden horde and becoming the first Russian state.
In the early 1500s, Russia continues to grow. In 1547, Ivan the Terrible conquered multiple tartar lands in the southeast, pushing all the way down to the Caspian Sea but loses some land to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to the east in 1558. Paranoid, Ivan killed many in fits of rage, even killing his own son. In 1582, Russia expanded eastward into Siberia, overtaking tartars and indigenous tribes.
