The Song Dynasty, founded after a period of disarray in China after the collapse of the Tang Dynasty, restored the tradition of a centralized rule in China. The Song Dynasty, unlike its predecessors, had a weak military due to a focus on education and administration. This meant that, while the government was strong, it could not hold up against the Jurchen and the Mongols, which led to its eventual downfall. The Song Dynasty also had financial troubles due to its over-rewarding of government officials. The Song also had to spend resources, for some of its existence, to keep the nomadic Khitan at bay.
