After the split of the Roman Empire, the eastern half became the Byzantine Empire. The emperors of Byzantine attempted to recapture the whole heritage of Rome, issued Justinian code, rebuilt Constantinople, and tried to restore Mediterranean unity. The fall occurred when the Ottoman Empire invaded and defeated the Byzantine Empire.
