The South did not want a republican as their president due to the fact that republicans wanted to ban slavery from US territories. When Abraham Lincoln became president 11 southern states seceded from the Union in order to form the Confederate States of America. President Lincoln tried to make amends with the south but it was not happening which led to the this war. Most important battles to know would be Fort Sumter (first battle), Antietam (bloodiest day of Civil War and American history), Gettysburg (largest casualties and turning point), Surrender at Appomattox Court House (Confederacy surrenders)
