During the time of European imperialism, Iran, under the Qajars, lost economic and political power as they lost land, sold oil-drilling rights, and borrowed from European banks, causing the country to be in a great debt. Middle class workers demanded a written constitution. In 1906, the Constitution of 1906 was formed, similar to western constitutions, introducing democratic reforms but also slightly increased the seperation between religion's part in the government.
