Duding the second half of 16th century, the new classical learning that was part of Italian Renaissance, humansim, spread to northern Europe. From that movement came Christian Humansim which is a movement that combines classical learning and individualism with the goal of reforming the Catholic church. Christian Humanism believes that people should actually be able to improve themselves and also to be able to improve the church and became closer to God, they believe that people can improve their selfes and the church by reading the classics and teachings of Christianity.
Christian Humanism believed that christianity should show people how to live good life on a basis that shouldn't just provide them with some beliefs but to show them how to live their lives.
The Christian Humansim also believed that the Catholic church was getting too involved with other things and they needed to go back to worrying about God and Jesus, that the faith should be focused internal not external.
During this period the Pope was involved in the politics stuffs, the Pope was focusing on advancing in this life instead of advancing on next life and that was concerning for lot of people.
During this timeframe the church owned the the majority of the land, they were getting all the money and all the profit and the church became so powerful and dominated Europe. During this time people needed salvations which means the acceptance into heaven, and what the church did to support the people was giving people the acceptance they needed. They started selling what are known as indulgences. Indulgence was a document signed by the church
Martin Luther didn't like how the church were selling the fake accessions to heaven. Martin Luther believed that people could never do enough good deeds and that believing in God and having a strong faith and focusing on the scriptures was how you actually would get into heaven.
