The leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party - Kumintang (KMT) for five decades and head of state of the Republic of China.

In 1949 after the victory of the Chinese Communist Party, Chiang and the KMT forces fled to Taiwan, where the government continued to work in exile, still recognised by many states as the legitimate government of China.

Taiwan remained China's representative in the UN until his death in 1975.
