In continuation of Japan’s war with China, they wanted to take control of the southeast borders. Therefore, Japanese troops advanced on nations such as Vietnam and took them over. The French government was kept, though its power had been significantly reduced. The puppet state would provide resources to Japan and would contribute to their overall success during the first half of WW2.
