After taking over Manchuria in 1931, Chinese and Japanese soldiers had been stationed at the border outside Beijing. Due to a misunderstanding, and an exchange of fire; Japanese soldiers were sent to further attack China. This could be considered the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. (Cavendish)
