The Confederacy, which was first formed around 1490 consisted of five nations (English name for the Confederacy) groups that made up the Iroquois (French name for the Confederacy) or also known as the Haudenosaunee (people of the longhouse). In 1722 a sixth party, the tuscarora, joined the Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga and the Cayugare group allies. They're original homes were alongside one another inhabiting in the Eastern woodland range of current northern New York State and southern Quebec and Ontario. They all had agreed to end the disputes between one another and to make the larger decisions as a uniformed party.1
This alliance was quite beneficial for them in several different ways. The first being the end of close to home physical battles between each of the associations, another was the power they gained above other groups by having a much larger population and having this large of an indigenous body meant that the Europeans would have a much harder time oppressing them through the early colonial years.
The first Iroquois Confederacy with the five nations as well as the joining of the sixth are both significant events in Canada's pre-Confederation because it strengthened these groups enough for their languages, elder stories, genes and their land connection to survive the affliction and persecution applied through the years of colonialism. Preserving all and any type of culture that inhabited the land before and during European contact is tremendously important in understanding what Canada as a country has been built upon.
