Between 1800-1830s, the Democratic Republicans (just Democrats after 1828) were the dominant party. They managed to win 13/15 elections during this period. The Federalists were the weaker party (between 1800-1816), as were the newly formed party known as the National Republicans (Later the Whigs). By the 1850's, both major parties were falling apart due to the debate over slavery. The Whigs completely lost their footing during this decade, and the Democratic Party split into two camps in the North and the South. The major issues debated one between the parties during this time period included:
1) Public land conflicts
2) the 2nd National Bank
3) High tariffs
4) Slavery
