This era was known as the rebirth due to the middle ages coming to an end, commercial revolution, trade crashing, the rediscovery of Greece and Rome, art, etc. This was the age of discovery and exploration, sailing ships westward across the Atlantic was common. They were trying to find the Orient (Asia) but instead arrive at America. They were trying to find their own trade route, as the prospect of being robbed was not good for business.
