Trent affair (24 ago 1861 ano – 1 jan 1862 ano)

Descrição:

On August 24, Confederate President Davis "names James M. Mason as commissioner to Great Britain and John Slidell as commissioner to France", to seek support from these countries ("The U.S. Civil War 1861 - 1865", 1996).

On November 8, "British mail packet Trent, carrying James M. Mason and John Slidell, Confederate commissioners to London and Paris, is halted in the Bahama Channel by the U.S. warship San Jacinto" ("Trent Affair", 2007). The seizure of the two men by the Union was deemed unauthorized and caused an uproar in Great-Britain. "The British government sent an ultimatum demanding an American apology and the release of Mason and Slidell." ("Trent Affair", 2018). Fearing a war with England, the Union government complied and Mason and Slidell were released on January 1, 1862.
