The English Civil War was a war occuring within England between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians over the control of the government. including the long parliament, Charles I, rump parliament, and Charles II. It eventually ended with the execution of Charles I, the exile of Charles II, and the Commonwealth of England which ended up becoming the Protectorate.
