Historical Significance: On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton's army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half.
Number of deaths: Union casualties for the battle and siege of Vicksburg were 4,835; Confederate were 32,697 (29,495 surrendered).

General Grant's reputation as a winning commander surged after his victory at the Battle of Vicksburg. By the next summer Lincoln made him commander of all the Union armies.
