Had two goals—reconcile with Protestants and reform the catholic church. The first goal was not accomplished due to insistence from the Protestants that the scripture was the only basis for discussion. However, some reform was made in terms of the Church—giving equal validity to scriptures and tradition as authority, disciplined bishops and established training for the clergy—shaping the Catholic Church into its more modern form today from its spiritual renewal.
