American government faced increasing popular opposition as a result of the series of humiliating failures during the War of 1812. In New England, some Federalists actually celebrated British victories because of their strong opposition both to the war and to the Republican government. Federalist opposition was led by Daniel Webster, a young congressman from New Hampshire. At the climax of this opposition, there appeared talk of secession throughout New England.
