After hearing about someone finding gold in the hills of California, the forty-niners start going over there to find some for themselves. By 1849, more than 80,000 of them had shown up. After the rise in population, California applied for statehood. After Congress declares them a state, President Taylor let them decide whether or not they wanted slavery; they became a free state
