First Arab General Strike (21 abr 1936 ano – 11 out 1936 ano)
Descrição:
This was when the Arab General Strike was officially called. The strike applied to all Arabs who were involved in labour, transport and shop keeping for the day. Despite the fact that the strike was initially organised for the Arab workers, political leaders got involved and helped the co-ordination. With them involved, the Arab Higher Committee was created and aimed "...to continue the general strike until the British Government changes its policy in a fundamental manner." The demands were for the prohibition of Jewish immigration, the prohibition of the transfer of Arab land to Jews, and the establishment of a national government. This ended after the British initiated harsh measures against the rebels which resulted in the strike being called off. The measures were to simply search Arab villages for weapons and wanted people, however, during the searches, it was said that "During the last searches effected in villages properties were destroyed, jewels stolen, and the Holy Qur'an torn." After this the Peel Commission was created.
