Initially only advisers were sent. The number of US troops increased after the Tet Offensive in 1964. The turning point of the war was the Tet Offensive in 1968. It ultimately did not hurt the the US effort, but it caused many US people to turn against the war. There were many anti-war protests, particularly the one at Kent State University that resulted in the deaths of 4 students who were shot by the National Guard. The US slowly started to withdraw troops in the late 70s under a policy called Vietnamization, where they turned responsibility for the war over to the South Vietnam people. Shortly after the withdrawal of US troops, South Vietnam was overtaken by the communists of North Vietnam. The Vietnam War is mostly considered a failure.
