Under the leadership of Sam Hughes, who dominated the mobilization effort free from the minister of militia, 30,000 men assembled at Valcartier, Quebec for training within the month.

These men were equipped with khaki uniforms and a Ross rifle (a weapon that proved good to be a good target and sniping rifle, but was heavy and would jam often).
