Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (24 dez 1798 ano – 3 dez 1799 ano)

Descrição:

Age: 55--56

In response to the newly enacted Alien and Sedition Acts, T.J. and James Madison compose a set of resolutions for the states of Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. On December 24th, 1798, the Virginia legislation adopts Madison's moderately-considered resolution. On December 3rd of the following year, Kentucky adopts T.J.'s more radically-considered resolution. The underlying theme that both T.J. and Madison is concerned about is the usurpation by the federal government of its constitutional powers and the infringement of state and (more importantly) natural rights. Their concerns are rooted in past experiences with British law; some of the provisions of the Alien and Sedition Act seem to echo some of the provisions found in the Intolerable Acts of 1774 (i.e. the prohibition of the right to assemble)
