Sir William Jones FRS FRSE came as a judge on the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal. He was a great Indologist and a Persian scholar. He wrote a book on Grammar of the Persian language, and translated many Persian works between 1771-73. He also learnt Sanskrit in depth and contributed to Calcutta review.
Established Asiatick Society in 1784 to “ enquiry into the history, antiquities of arts, sciences and literature of Asia” and started the Journal Asiatic Researches. He is known for his proposition of the existence of a relationship among European and Indian languages.
