In the 1800s, African dance and music was popularized by the minstrel show, or minstrelsy. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that mocked people, specifically of African descent. The cakewalk dance, which became the finale of the minstrel show, became popular throughout the country.
